Our collective is made up of three initiatives; The Art of Afrika Fellowship, The Sociology of Design, and The Craft of Art Gallery . These three branches of our organisation support our core goal of simplifying the complex.
The Sociology of Design is the intellectual heartbeat and research engine of our collective.
This newsletter is part manifesto, part inquiry. We’re here to challenge the canon, spotlight radical thinkers, and dream louder about what African design could be. This isn’t just about aesthetics or tech — it’s about power. Operating at the critical intersection of social theory, emerging technology, and visual culture, the publication dissects how the tools, interfaces, and systems we build inevitably shape human behaviour and societal structures. We move beyond the surface level of user experience to interrogate who technology serves, who it excludes, and how algorithmic biases impact the African continent.
Deep dives into AI representation, data justice, and the geopolitical power dynamics of global tech in Africa.
Canon challenging essays spotlighting indigenous design methodologies, and radical thinkers who have been sidelined by Eurocentric design history.
Thought-provoking explorations of how human-centred design can be weaponised for social impact, community empowerment, and true ubuntu.
Stories of burnout, joy, and navigating the art and design industry. This will give insights into the humanity of the Art of Afrika Collective Community
